What Can Acupuncture Do For You?

Acupuncture is one part of Chinese Medicine that has been used for centuries to support people experiencing pain and discomfort. It involves the insertion of very fine, single-use sterile needles at specific points in the body.

Research suggests acupuncture may assist with:

  • Reducing muscle tightness

  • Improving local circulation

  • Supporting relaxation and stress relief

Some people report feeling relief, greater ease of movement, or improved wellbeing after acupuncture. However, it’s important to note that everyone’s experience is different, and the effects of acupuncture can vary.

What I Can Offer

  • Safe, evidence-informed practice

  • Treatment plans tailored to your needs

  • Calm, supportive environment to help you feel at ease

The Research Out There

  • Zhang et al. 2024

This review of multiple clinical trials found that people with chronic low back pain experienced reduced pain and improved function after acupuncture treatment. While the quality of studies varied, the overall findings suggest acupuncture is a safe and potentially helpful option for managing chronic low back pain.

  • Li et al. 2024

This review of 11 clinical trials found that people with chronic low back pain experienced pain relief and better movement when combining acupuncture with core muscle exercises. While acupuncture was studied alongside exercise, making it hard to separate the effects, these findings highlight acupuncture as a promising part of a supportive care approach.

  • Lin et al. 2024

This research found that people with short-term low back pain reported slightly better outcomes with acupuncture than with medication alone. While the effects were modest and studies varied, acupuncture offers a safe and drug-free option that may be worth considering as part of your pain management plan.

 FAQs

  • Yes, acupuncture is generally safe when performed by a qualified practitioner. I use sterile, single-use needles to ensure hygiene and minimise any risk. Side effects are rare, but you may experience mild soreness or slight bruising at the needle sites, which usually resolves quickly.

  • Most people feel minimal discomfort, if any, during acupuncture. The needles are very thin, much finer than standard medical needles. You may feel a slight pinch or a tingling sensation when they are inserted, but many patients find the experience relaxing.

  • The number of sessions depends on your condition, its severity, and your response to treatment. Some people notice improvements after just one session, while others may need ongoing treatment over several weeks or months for more chronic issues. I’ll work with you to create a personalised plan based on your needs.

  • Some people feel immediate relief, while others notice gradual improvements over several sessions. The speed of results depends on the condition being treated, its severity, and your overall health.

  • We’ll start by discussing your health concerns and goals are. I’ll then assess your overall condition. When you’re ready, you’ll have your acupuncture treatment where fine sterilised needles will be inserted at specific points on your body. I like to allow the body to rest while the needles do their work. Many patients feel relaxed or even fall asleep during this time. Additional therapies may be applied depending on the treatment plan.

  • Yes, I am fully approved by the Health Industry Claims and Payments Service (HICAPS), which means you can claim your private health fund rebate directly at both KO Healing Acupuncture and Health Space Potts Point. Both clinics are equipped with HICAPS machines, so you can submit your claim on the spot. Please check with your health fund to confirm coverage for acupuncture.
